Herbaceous plants survey

Planning to start design works but your property is on former agricultural land or forested area and where there is a likelihood of finding protected plants or valuable plant habitats and the value of those need to be determined before design work begins.

Herbaceous plants survey provides an overview of habitat types, species composition, prevalence, and the condition of the habitats. The inventory offers recommendations and guidelines for landscape and greenery maintenance. In the case of finding invasive alien species, recommendations are given for limiting their spread and/or control, and in the case of finding protected plants, recommendations are made for preserving the community. The work necessary for the herbaceous plants survey consists of fieldwork and paperwork. During fieldwork, species and habitat types are determined, and necessary parameters are measured if needed (such as the distribution area, coordinates of specimens, etc.), and notes are made about health condition and various values of the habitats. In the digitalization phase, all information collected during the fieldwork is included and formulated into a report. The final report consists a descriptive note, a list of inventoried objects, and a drawing.

Typically, the need for a survey of herbaceous plants is established and determined by the local government. This kind of inventory is usually required before design phase on land that has been completely untouched by construction activities (such as plots in forested areas and on former agricultural land) and where there is a likelihood of finding protected plants or valuable plant habitats. For example, an inventory of herbaceous plants is necessary before detailed planning, obtaining building permits and construction notices, and different kind of excavation work. Essentially, this means that herbaceous plants survey is needed before designing civil engineering works (including utility networks), adding an extension to a building, and reconstruction works.

The best time to involve a botanist for conducting the herbaceous plants survey is when the topo-geodetic base plan is completed. It is important to conduct all the necessary site investigations before the design phase starts. This allows the design phase to start correctly and provides a valuable input to the success of the project and the application procedure of the building permit. However, it should be noted that herbaceous plants can be inventoried during the vegetation period when the shoots of the plants with identifiable characteristics are visible, and therefore, we conduct surveys only from May to September.
