The task was to reconstruct the existing kindergarten building and its outdoor space.

At Mängupesa kindergarten, it is a tradition to name the groups of children after trees and shrubs. This inspired the concept connecting interior architecture and outdoor space, leading to the assignment of a tree corresponding to each group’s name in the kindergarten yard. The kindergarten’s staff had previously planted trees for each group, but many of them were too small and didn’t withstand the active play around them. Consequently, the outdoor space was redesigned with new design that structures play areas and encourages hide-and-seek games.

Since construction supervision by designer was not included in the design work and the construction supervision wasn’t competent regarding landscape architecture, several species were replaced during construction phase, resulting in some kindergarten groups missing their own trees.

This project included a woody plant survey and the urban greenery design part of the landscape design, which was developed up to the detailed design stage.
