The goal of the vision competition entry was to find a delicate landscape design approach for Lembitu Park that would symbolize the friendship between Estonia and Ukraine and express Estonia’s support for Ukraine. The existing condition of the project area is typical of a Soviet-era park.
The area has large trees with spreading canopies, seating, a playground, and the cultural heritage monument sculpture “Kolhoosineiu” (author: J. Eskel, 1964).
The vision competition solution focuses on embroidery patterns, that is, the Ukrainian national code (embroidery in Ukrainian is вишиванка). The rhombus element has been used to create various new park spaces such as the central park square, playground, adventure trail, picnic area and seating pockets. Regarding greenery design, the colors of flowers and symbol plants in both Estonian and Ukrainian national colors were used, and the focus was also on creating biodiversity areas. The solution proposed for the vision competition hides a message that symbolizes the friendship, peace, faith and love between Estonia and Ukraine. The central square’s fountain is formed by storks taking flight from the grass. In a dynamic flight pose, they symbolize freedom and liberation; storks symbolize hope and independence; water symbolizes life and healing.
